In the Kitchen with Rebecca Minkoff

The fashion designer invites us in for a video tour of her New York City kitchen and shares a favorite salad recipe

In the Kitchen with Fashion Designer Rebecca Minkoff

New York–based fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff is known for combining an edgy, downtown aesthetic with just a hint of uptown polish, and celebrities, including Kristen Stewart and Rachel McAdams, are regularly spotted wearing her clothing or carrying her bags. But friends know that Minkoff's talents aren't limited to the runway. The designer also loves to cook, and she has a knack for gathering people around the table for good company and a great meal. In other words, she's a natural entertainer.

Ever the hostess, Minkoff invited us into the loft apartment she shares with her husband, actor-director Gavin Bellour, and their baby son, Luca. Like many New York City apartments, Minkoff's has space limitations, but the cook-friendly, party-ready kitchen was its biggest selling point for Minkoff and her family. Buffet seats are a fun feature—Minkoff plans to re-cover them with leather from her handbags—and open shelving lets Minkoff display her eclectic mix of plates, glasses, and serving pieces.

The salad Minkoff prepares here is an update on one her mom used to make when she was growing up in San Diego. With its mix of mesclun, beets, bell peppers, tomatoes, goat cheese, and butter-crisped garlic, the dish blends a variety of textures and beautiful colors, which isn't surprising coming from a celebrated designer. Minkoff's salad is hearty enough to be a meal on its own, or as she suggests, pair it with a protein, and dinner is ready.
