Classicmulled cideris one of my favorite parts of fall. It's usually pretty basic: apple cider simmered with cinnamon, cloves, and maybe a little all spice and nutmeg. But why stop there? This warming drink doesn't have to be so standardized.
Here's how to upgrade your mug:
Go Savory
Sweet spices are the norm, but let some savory ones join in on the fun. Black pepper adds pungent, mild heat whilebay leavesadd a slightly woody, aromatic note.
Add Booze
Make an adult version by spiking your cider with a little alcohol. Spirits like apple brandy, dark rum, and whiskey all do the job well. Just add a splash or two and stir right before serving.
Cider Swap
Apple cider isn't the only cider that can be mulled. Instead, reach for pear cider—use it in combination with apple, or all on its own.
Spike With Citrus
Brighten up the drink by adding a few fresh citrus peels to the mix.Orange peelsare classic, but lime, lemon, and grapefruit all carry their own great flavors and aromas.
Tea Party
Steep a few tea bags in the cider while it simmers. Earl Grey adds citrus notes while Chai boosts the spice factor. Or try herbalRooibos teato add hints of vanilla.
Use fresh herbs
Think woodsy herbs like thyme, rosemary, and sage—they all bump up the savory factor. Just throw a couple of sprigs into the liquid while it simmers.
Go Spicy
Add spice in the form of dried chiles.Ancho chileslends smoky heat whileguajillo chilesare mild and herbal.
