For those who aren't quite ready to spend the money (even at a discount) on Le Creuset, we really recommend Lodge's take on the enameled Dutch oven. It sears meat evenly, has a nice light-colored interior, and a sturdy build. We even felt that the slope of the sides made it easier to stir and scrape fond from the bottom of the pan than in the Le Creuset in our test. However, these Dutch ovens, we know from experience, are prone to chipping after years of heavy-duty use. They're great starter Dutch ovens, or auxiliary Dutch ovens if your kitchen can support more than one.
