My boss has a catchphrase. "You know what nobody likes?" he says. "Nobody likes change, and nobody likes surprises." (He sometimes then goes on to announce some sort of change or surprise.)

Typically I'd agree with my boss (and not just because he's my boss), but three of our newest recipes prove him wrong. Each one has a secret ingredient that makes the recipe surprising—in agoodway.

A prime example: these carrots, topped with an earthy pesto made not from basil, not from parsley, not from mint, but from—secret ingredient!—carrot tops.

Sticking with the 3-ingredient theme, here are some braised short ribs (yes, it's still braised short-rib weather around here) flavored with—secret ingredient!—prunes.

Finally, something really crazy. It's a pudding. A chocolate pudding. With a silky texture thanks to—secret ingredient!—avocados.

The best part about this pudding: Because it's made with avocado, it's kind of, sort of healthy-ish. Healthy chocolate pudding—who wouldn't love a surprise like that?
