Maraschino liqueur sounds obscure but it's often hiding in plain sight. Seek it for this simple, classic cocktail.

Ingredients

Makes 1

2 ounces London dry gin
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur (such as Luxardo)
Maraschino cherry (for serving)
  1. Step 1

Combine gin, lemon juice, and maraschino liqueur in a cocktail shaker. Fill shaker with ice, cover, and shake vigorously until outside of shaker is very cold, about 20 seconds.

    Step 2

Place cherry in a martini glass and strain cocktail through a Hawthorne strainer or a slotted spoon into glass.

  • This isn't an Aviation. WTF?

  • I'm just a little confused - the header Aviation was followed by "combine champagne, gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup"... Thinking to myself, that's a French 75, I had to look at the recipe. Glad to see the recipe was correct - yet, the addition of Crème de violette makes a prettier cocktail and certainly shows the relationship between 'Aviation' and 'off we go into the wild blue younder'.

  • What? You're kidding, right? Where's the Creme de Violette? You DARE to leave out the most important ingredient? It's what gives this cocktail the sky-blue color for which it was named. If you don't know that then you're certainly not a qualified bartender and you have no business making this drink. Unbelievable.
