Strawberry Jam

Strawberry Jam Ditte Isager

Adding grated apple, a pectin-packed fruit, naturally jells the jam and gives it a pleasant tartness.

Ingredients

Makes about 1 1/2 cups

1 pound fresh (or frozen, thawed) hulled, quartered strawberries
2/3 cup sugar

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  1. Combine 1 pound fresh (or frozen, thawed) hulled, quartered strawberries and 2/3 cup sugar in a large heavy skillet. Stir in 1 peeled, coarsely grated large Granny Smith apple. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring and breaking up strawberries, until sugar dissolves. Simmer until jam is thickened, 10-15 minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. Transfer to a bowl or jar; let cool. Cover and chill until set, about 2 hours. Keep chilled; serve within 2 weeks.

  • This is wonderful! Have made it many times, and will try it with fresh peaches and other fruits soon. Wanted to mention that it also turned out very well on a day I did not have a fresh apple in the house, and used about 4 ounces of unsweetened applesauce as a substitute.

  • Easy, delicious, I might never buy strawberry jam again! Adding the apple is natural pectin and gives a little tartness to the jam.

  • Good taste, but didn't thicken as expected. I will try again and make sure I get to the 220 degrees suggested in other jam recipes.

  • I've made this three times already in the past few weeks. It's perfect! It makes a small amount so it's not a big production. I even added some chopped fresh apricots today. I've used different kinds of apples, depending on what I had in the house.

  • Just made a batch and barely let it cool completely before stirring some into my greek yogurt...absolutely delicious & love that its all natural. The only thing I changed was omitting the sugar (because family member has to watch sugar intake) and instead I added 1 T honey plus 1 T pure maple syrup. Will definitely make more for me and to share!

  • Wow. Just made this on a whim when I realized I needed a good dish for a food exchange later this week, and for once had all the ingredients on hand. Easy, easy, easy, and sooo delish. Very sweet. Could probably halve the sugar and still get great results, but it tastes so good. Heading to the store for a second pound of strawberries to make a second batch for myself.

  • I made this jam when my strawberries got slightly crushed at the bottom of my bicycle-going grocery backpack, and I can't get enough of it. I find excuses to put it on everything, and I'm even baking things just to eat it with (I rarely bake, so my husband is thrilled). It's so easy, fills the house with delicious aroma, lasts weeks, and now I plan to make all sorts of fruit jams using this method. Definitely apricot. Kiwi, maybe? :)

  • Delicious! I used 1/3 c. Sugar and a couple of tbsp. of stevia just to lower sugar content. Spooned warm jam (couldn't wait for it to cool) over plain Greek yogurt. Divine!
