These scones are light, flaky, and airy—closer to a biscuit than the crumbly pastries you might have in mind.
Ingredients
Makes 10 servings
Step 1
Preheat oven to 425°F. Whisk baking powder, salt, and 1 1/2 cups flour in a large bowl. Add butter and blend with your fingertips until pea-size pieces form. Add milk and sugar and mix with a fork until a shaggy dough forms. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and gently knead until dough just comes together, 3 or 4 times.
Step 2
Gently pat dough into a 1"-thick round. Using a 2" round biscuit cutter or inverted small glass, cut out scones. Gather scraps and repeat, patting out and cutting to make 10 scones. Transfer to a parchmentlined rimmed baking sheet and brush with egg.
Step 3
Bake scones until golden brown, 15-20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature, split, with clotted cream, jam, and/or lemon curd.
Step 4
DO AHEAD:Scones can be made 8 hours ahead. Let cool completely and store airtight at room temperature.

Back to TopEasy and quick to make. Definitely bake in close to or less than 15mins. I added some dried fruit also. Appreciated that they were not overly sweet like many scones

I just tried this recipe, which seemed to be nice and straight-forward. I used buttermilk instead of milk, and added 1 teaspoon baking soda, which due to the acidity of the buttermilk, made the baking soda react. Nice and fluffy, and I agree, the result is something between a great South- State biscuit and a scone!

These are yummy. Made as directed with the addition of the zest of one orange and a handful of dried cranberries. Makes about 7 if you use a 3" round cutter instead of 2".

These were the first scones I have made & I added dried cranberries. They came out looking beautiful, but had a bit of a baking powder taste. I think I will increase the sugar & decrease the baking powder by 1/4 tsp. They baked in just under 15 mins. & were very light & flaky. I am at 7,000 ft., so have to make adjustments to most recipes:)

These are about the easiest scones I've ever made. The dough is perfect-not sticky like most where you have to add more flour. They are also perfect little gems-one is plenty for me. They are like biscuits which is nice if you wanted to make gravy with them. My daughter who doesn't like scones loved these. Oh, and mine were done in 15 minutes.
