Stuck on sun tea? Our test kitchen took a cue from coffee fanatics and made a batch of tea cold-brew style, steeping it in the fridge instead. The result? Mellower, more flavorful, and perfect for those rainy days, too.

Ingredients

8 servings

10 black tea bags
  1. Combine 10 black tea bags and 8 cups cold water in a large pitcher. Cover; chill at least 4 hours. Discard tea bags. Serve over ice with lemon slices.

  • I have been trying various “recipes” for iced tea for several years. These very simple instructions make the very best iced tea for me. Thank you!! P. S. I only use 8 tea bags- Twinings English Breakfast tea.

  • I make sun tea all the time. I use Tetley for Iced Tea. I like the smooth taste of it best and the convenience of the oversized tea bags.

  • Southern California has bright sunny days more often than not....the hippie in me still prefers sun-tea. It's so much easier and appeals to the lazy me!

  • I thought this was very good. I used the recommended 10 bags of earl grey. For those who don't know - this recipe was a result of a taste test where different types of tea and different brewing methods were used. The cold brew was the winner (with Bigelow's Earl Grey). If they didn't post the recipe there would have been a bunch of negative comments about a taste test with no recipe. I guess you can't win.

  • Not sure why people would get so grumpy over a simple recipe for a smooth iced tea which reduces bitterness that usually occurs when heated tea is iced--maybe try cooling off with a glass of it?

  • Great method, good to share it. Smooth, less caffeine and acid. (Safer than sun tea. This Ice tea is a classic refreshing and healthful beverage, if you like ice tea, this recipe should be in you repertoire, if you don’t. Why comment? My only suggestion is ten tea bags are not required, you could reduce the number and still make great tea.

  • Tea is native to southeast China, not southeast United States. (in case anyone didn't know) If steeping tea leaves in cold water were superior to steeping them in hot water, Asian cultures would have settled on that method 2,000 years ago. They did not.

  • I've made this several times this summer with all kinds of variations. It's a foolproof method for delivering excellent ice tea. As far as the snarky comment below goes: really?

  • Really? A published recipe in a respected website for tea bags and cold water? Maybe you can link it to a recipe on how to make the accompanying ice cubes. The rating should be zero forks, but that wasn't an option
