Cherry Cola Barbecue Sauce

A sweet-savory sauce that's great with the grilled meats. Adjust the heat by adding hot pepper sauce to taste.

Ingredients

Makes about 4 cups

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 cups chopped onions
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 12-ounce bottles (ketchup-style) chili sauce
1 12- to 13-ounce jar cherry preserves or jam
1 cup cherry cola (regular, not diet)
1/3 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon (or more) hot pepper sauce
  1. Heat oil in heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Add onions; sauté until golden, about 7 minutes. Add garlic and stir 1 minute. Stir in chili sauce, preserves, cherry cola, brown sugar, and vinegar; bring to simmer, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer uncovered until reduced to 4 cups, stirring often to prevent scorching, about 50 minutes. Stir in 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper and more hot pepper sauce, if desired. Transfer to bowl and cool completely. DO AHEAD:Can be made 2 weeks ahead. Cover and refrigerate.

  • Spectacular! I keep re-making this, with slight modifications based on my mood! Spicy paprika versus regular. Dr Pepper versus cherry cola. Sriracha ketchup and one chili sauce. Haven’t had a bad batch!

  • I have made this sauce a number of times and it is always delicious. I wish I always had a jar on hand but as soon as I make it I come up with ideas about how to use it and before a week has passed it is gone. I like sweet and spicy so I put a good heaping tablespoon of red pepper flakes in the sauce while it’s simmering. I finish it with the stick blender. Excellent on pulled pork, ribs, chicken...

  • I made this a couple weeks ago and everyone loved it. It went great on a cheeseburger, chicken, pork chops and much more I'm sure. I see a lot of reviews here are rather old so not sure I will get an answer to my question but it's worth a try. I saw that someone substituted Dr. Pepper for Cherry Coke and said it turned out great and I had a question. Would this work with root beer? I don't want it to turn out too thin without the preserves but think that the other ingredients would go good with root beer. Also thought about trying it with orange preserves/marmalade and seeing how that worked. Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • unlike my fellow reviewers, I found this way too sweet. I decreased the brown sugar but still too sweet. I felt it was missing something as well.

  • I have used this recipe for years now. I add a lot more brown sugar since my husband likes really sweet sauce. I also use a stick blender to make the cherries smooth in the sauce.

  • This is the best BBQ sauce. My daughter puts it on everything. I gave some to my neighbor with some ribs, and she told me she was using bread, boiled eggs, you name it, to use up the remaining sauce. It keeps a long time and has become a staple in our house.

  • Loved this! We used it to baste country-style ribs, and it was absolutely delicious. We used molasses instead of brown sugar and pureed the reduced sauce in the food processor.

  • Here in the south, we've been making barbeque sauces with cola and ketchup for decades; so I had to laugh when I saw this one. I tried it, though, and I must say it's delicious. I prefer molasses to brown sugar, too, but otherwise wouldn't change a thing.

  • Very good sauce. Made it for company and they loved it. I pureed in a blender for a smooth sauce and poured some in a squeeze bottle to use at the table.

  • Does it really matter if I use balsamic vinegar rather than wine vinegar and what about the chilli sauce....how much of a difference will that make if I just used ketchup.....

  • This sauce is the bomb. I add roasted jalepenos to make it pop even more. My friends freak out when they taste this sauce on my smoked ribs.
