A boozy whiskey cocktail that's equal parts mezcal smoke and festive sweetness, thanks to a warm, spice-infused maple syrup.

For the maple-spiced simple syrup:
Step 1
In a small saucepan, combine maple syrup with spices and 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil and turn off the heat. Cover and let stand for at least 30 minutes (or up to overnight), and then strain into a clean container.
For each cocktail:
Step 2
In a cocktail shaker, combine whiskey, mezcal, maple-spiced simple syrup, and lemon juice. Add ice and shake. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish with lemon twist.
The maple-spiced simple syrup can be made up to 3 weeks in advance, and will make enough for 10 cocktails.

Back to TopI suggested the Smokey Robinson to my virtual cocktail group for last Friday night's get together. All of us enjoyed it and gave it high marks. Oh baby baby, it was so good!

Made this using recommended amounts but with Buffalo Trace, Del Maguey Vida and Sapling Maple Liquor and added a dash of Angostura bitters. It’s quickly become my favorite cocktail.

Yum! Naturally you have to like whiskey and mezcal. I prefer this with a little less mezcal and suggest you start with 1/4 oz and add more if you like it smokier. The drink goes nicely in copper "mule" mugs. The spiced maple syrup is fabulous in other drinks that use maple syrup.

I would give it 10 forks if I had the option! We made it for a party and I served it over oversized ice cubes. We were running out of ice cubes and fighting for the last ones! I made it with Hudson Whiskey Maple Cask Rye, which is AMAZING and made it extra special. I'm looking forward to trying it with other whiskeys so I can sip my maple cask rye solo :)

Nice! It was reminiscent of a fresh whiskey sour, but had some spicy, smoky undertones from the mezcal and the spiced syrup. Better for entertaining than just making one for yourself, since the syrup takes (a little) effort, and you'll end up with plenty of it.

Nice cocktail but after the first one, I reduced the lemon juice to 1/2 oz. To be fair, I made this with Canadian Club, and Jose Cuervo. I made the syrup with 1/2 natural maple syrup and 1/2 dark corn syrup but it is what makes the cocktail. Because I made so many substitution, I don't feel I can rate it; but it is a nice cocktail--we drank 6 of them!

Made these at a party recently and they were a hit! I prepped the syrup in advance but forgot to double the recipe, however the drink is fine with less syrup, in fact maybe better since it was less sweet.

I love this - sipping one now. The star anise brings a subtle licorice flavor that is really tasty. I've changed the recipe just a little to suit my own taste - I do 1 ounce each of the whiskey and the mescal for a little added smokiness. But it is really good in the original blend - a great winter sipping cocktail!

Seems like a lot of work for a drink. After all that preparation and procuring of ingredients I'll need a drink.

Ruthann, there's a cocktail called a Vermontucky Lemonade, which sounds very similar (although simpler than) to what you're describing. Bourbon would be great with the spices!

I haven't tried this yet as I need to get some star anise but it sounds wonderful!! (I make my own maple syrup!) Do you think this would taste good with bourbon? Anyone?
