Pineapple Orange Batidos

Long before smoothies swept our nation, Puerto Rico and Cuba were whipping up their own fruit shakes, known asbatidos.

Ingredients

Serves 2

1/4 pineapple (labeled "extra sweet"), peeled, cored, and cut into chunks (1 cup)
3/4 cup ice cubes
3/4 cup fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup whole milk
Garnish: pineapple wedges and orange slices
  1. Blend pineapple, ice, orange juice, sugar, and a pinch of salt in a blender until smooth. Add milk and blend until frothy. Serve immediately.

  • We made this with yogurt, frozen pineapple, tangerine juice and a a banana and it really hit the spot (plus added some potassium.)

  • Great Breakfast/Brunch Drink. Also can be made with pineapple chunks canned in their own juice (which is what I had on hand). I will definately be making this again.

  • This is a delicious, fresh and creamy smoothy. It still tastes great with store-bought orange-pineapple juice instead of fresh orange juice. We like using turbinado sugar.
