Back to TopThis sangria (cocktail?) was quite delicious. With the grapefruit juice, bitter aperitif wine, and vino verde, it was refreshing and pleasantly bitter. My guests loved it and I would definitely make it again. So why am I giving the recipe only 3 stars? I'm totally annoyed at the hipster attitude of Bon Appetit magazine. (Yeah... we are going to run a recipe with an ingredient that is super cool, but we're sure you've never heard of it...) Suze Saveur is pretty hard to get a hold of in the US. Up until recently, bartenders were smuggling it into the country. Very few people are going to be able to find Suze in their local liquor stores. Most will have to order it by mail. I'm OK with being introduced to a new ingredient, but I think Bon Appetit should have offered alternatives to Suze. Personally, I used Cocchi Americano in place of the Suze. I've also seen Grand Classico and Birrermens Amerre Sauvage suggested as substitutes, though the Grand Classico is not really in the right color family for this drink.
