Cranberry-Orange Relish with Mint

Cranberry-Orange Relish with Mint Jonathon Kambouris

"When it comes to cranberry sauce, I'm no fan of the back-of-the-bag recipe: It's too sweet and offers little in the way of texture. That's why I've made this raw, tangy, refreshing relish ever since I started hosting Thanksgiving. It's my new classic." —Andrew Knowlton, restaurant and drinks editor

Ingredients

Makes about 6 cups

2 12-ounce bags fresh (or frozen, thawed) cranberries
2 teaspoons orange zest from 1 of 4 navel oranges
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup minced red onion
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1 tablespoon minced peeled ginger
  1. Pulse two 12-ounce bags fresh (or frozen, thawed) cranberries in a food processor until coarsely chopped. Transfer to a large bowl. Finely grate 2 teaspoons orange zest from 1 of 4 navel oranges; set aside. Using a sharp paring knife, remove peel and white pith from oranges. Working over a medium bowl, cut between membranes to release orange segments. Coarsely chop segments; add to cranberries. Stir 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup minced red onion, 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint, 1 tablespoon minced peeled ginger, and reserved zest into cranberry mixture. Cover; let stand at room temperature for 2 hours. DO AHEAD:Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill.

  • A thanksgiving staple. I’ve been making this for years. I give it to neighbors In glass jars. It’s fresh, easy to do and a great addition to turkey sandwiches and leftovers.

  • I make some version of this whenever I find fresh cranberries. Extra orange, extra ginger, no mint, more mint, grapefruit, more or less sugar - this recipe is just a jumping off point for making a cranberry relish. It's fabulous as is, but infinitely adjustable to taste.

  • I have been making this since it was originally published in Gourmet. Our family never liked cranberry sauce - this is not that! It is crisp and refreshing - perfect pairing with a heavy meal. And, with a bit of whipped cream, it serves a second purpose as dessert for guests who want something a bit lighter.

  • This is the best cranberry dish! People, including me, who have never liked or eaten traditional cranberry sauce LOVE this! Perfect as a refreshing side and then later with some whipped cream as a light dessert!

  • I am making this relish AGAIN for thanksgiving, and I think I have been making it almost every year for over 10 years, so I must have seen it when it was originally published. I thought I should leave a review! This is a fantastic relish. It is different than a cranberry sauce. I always make this and also have a cranberry sauce as well. I prefer this relish though. People either love it or they don't, depending on their palate and their preference. I have several people ask for the recipe or request that I make it for the next thanksgiving. What I love most about this recipe is that it is SO easy to make, it looks beautiful, and it adds a very nice punch to the meal.

  • This relish is very good. This will be my 2nd thanksgiving making it. I received a few requests to make it again this year.

  • I liked the flavors, it was bright and different. I found myself eating only a little bit though and there were tons of leftovers. Make sure your thanksgiving crew is open to mixing things up before you replace your regular cranberry sauce.

  • This was a surprise and wonderfully different. I left out the onion, since I have a few onion haters in the house. But even without, it was fresh and tasty. I must admit I was very suspicious about not cooking the cranberries, but I will be repeating this again.

  • This cranberry relish is delightful. It's nice to have a bite of fresh, slightly sweet and tart relish to round out the savory gravy and turkey at Thanksgiving. I received rave compliments all around. Even more interesting was using fresh, uncooked cranberries which had a nice crispy crunch to them. The recipe is perfect as is.

  • I made this for Thanksgiving as a change from the usual cooked cranberry sauce. My family loved it - the fresh ginger was a nice taste surprise. Next time I'll add a little more mint, but otherwise won't change a thing.

  • My brother made this for Thanksgiving. The red onion and mint gave the relish a more complex flavor than the usual cranberry relish. Everyone even the 2 year old loved it. Only one issue I can't use the leftovers for my cranberry pumpkin muffins on Friday morning.

  • Extremely simple, tastes bright and clean- sweet and slightly savory. An easy addition to Thanksgiving, and the family loves it. Be careful to sample the onion before adding it, as raw onion can vary a lot.
