Folding fruit into guacamole is an inspired tradition in Mexican cooking. Tropical mangoes are a natural pairing, their silky flesh adding a subtle tartness to creamy avocado. To herald the holiday season, pomegranate seeds flash bright red against the guacamole's cilantro-flecked green. Head over here for our guide tohow to cut a pomegranate.

Ingredients

Makes 8 (hor's d'oeuvres) servings

4 ripe avocados (2 pounds total)
1 cup finely chopped white onion
2 fresh serrano chiles, finely chopped (2 tablespoons), including seeds
1/4 cup fresh lime juice, or to taste
3/4 cup pomegranate seeds (from 1 pomegranate)
3/4 cup diced peeled mango
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
Accompaniment:plantain chips
Garnish: lime wedges
  1. Halve, pit, and peel avocados. Coarsely mash in a bowl. Stir in onion, chiles, 1/4 cup lime juice, and 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, then fold in pomegranate seeds, mango, and cilantro. Season with salt and additional lime juice.

Cooks’ note:

Guacamole can be made 4 hours ahead and chilled, its surface covered with parchment paper or plastic wrap. Bring to room temperature and stir before serving.

  • A different take on a perennial favorite. Still prefer the original - but this is nice and slightly sweet when needed!

  • This is ALWAYS a hit when I make it. The mango adds sweetness and the pomegranates make it crunchy. DELISH

  • I would give this 2 1/2 forks. It wasn't really guacamole per se. I thought it was good but not great. Flavors didn't really mesh together like a real guacamole¿ so it really just tasted like avocado with mango with onion with pomegranate with a kick. It just seemed to be missing "something"¿ maybe actually adding tomato would've done the trick? not sure. was good but not great. That being said, all was eaten¿ but we had a very large xmas party so not entirely surprising!

  • I made half this recipe for Father's day and it still made a lot. It is a GREAT!! recipe. Next time I would either use 1 large (for half the recipe) avocado or double the mango and pomegranate seeds. The plaintain chips were good with this and so were pita chips.

  • This was great! The only changes I made: I cooked the onions first because my husband doesn't like the raw taste. I had some leftover lime zest so I tossed that in. We devoured it.

  • Delicious! Followed the recipe exactly as is and wouldn't change a thing. Served with corn chips instead of making the plantain chips.

  • As pomegranates are hard to locate after January and are also harder to cleanup than a crime scene, I used Ocean Spray dried cranberries infused with pomegranate juice instead, and my guests raved about the flavor and color of the dish. I will use this substitution from now on.

  • What a beautiful presentation. It was fresh, had great flavors, and seemed to be a huge hit. I was a bit chicken on the chiles - just used one and omitted the seeds. It was still delicious.

  • An excellent recipe -- I served with veggie tortilla chips and cassava chips (both from Trader Joe's) - everyone loved the recipe. It needs a good 1-2 teaspoons of salt, which has been omitted from the recipe. It would also be great as a lower calorie appetizer with jicama spears or served on endive leaves.

  • 好极了! !我已经做了几年now during the holiday season. Just took it to a party last week & everyone loved it. I don't like cilantro, so I leave it out. If I have parsley, I put some in for the look of cilantro without the flavor.

  • Made this for a girls night get together. Fantastic , added extra mango. Plated it by mixing in mangos and sprinkling pomegranate seeds on top. Served with tortilla chips. I have never made a recipe that created such a positive buzz, everyone wanted the recipe.
